Getting Situated

Discover the various operational teams that are in place at your organisation

Identify the leads for each team and try to identify who you report to as well as who that person reports to as well all the way to the company directors. Being aware of the organisational hierarchy is very important as you navigate your first workplace

Understand and adhere to the workplace rules. Do not assume any of them to be subjective such as work starts at 9 and you may think 9:30 is OK. If the rules are 9 and you are there everyday at 9, there will be no further argument on that point. Apply the same thought process against every other rule in the workplace

The role that you have been hired for will be unclear at first. Organisations will attempt to give you menial or low level tasks as a start to see how you cope and progress before assigning you a more defined role. Ensure that you understand your objectives clearly and seek further knowledge on the subject matter. This may not be something that you have learnt during your higher education, nevertheless, this is the knowledge that will define your success

Alert your superior or lead if you are going to miss work or will be coming in late. Before you decide to come in late for the day, really consider the message and if it’s necessary. As a working adult, you will be held accountable for your actions, thus really take the time to consider your actions and words as you should use this to give off the right or best attitude possible
